1. Louisiana’s Old State Capitol
Step into the state’s legacy with a visit to this National Historic Landmark. The Old State Capitol is a Gothic Revival building constructed in the mid-1800s. You can explore the monument and grounds for free Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Old State Capitol also hosts fun community events like the Halloween Craft Workshop and the Spirits of Louisiana annual gala. Regular and rotating exhibits include presentations about the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition and the various bridges crossing the Mississippi River. The capitol is located at 100 North Blvd.
2. Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center
This peaceful preserve spans more than 100 acres, providing a respite from the bustle of Baton Rouge. In the learning center, you’ll find live animal exhibits, minerals, decoys, local art, and other artifacts highlighting the area’s natural heritage. Bluebonnet also has more than a mile of trails where you can spot coyotes, foxes, birds, and other natural species.
The nature center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission costs $2 for ages 3 to 17, $3 for ages 18 to 64, and $2.50 for ages 65 and older and college students. Children are free through age 2. Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center is located at 10503 North Oak Hills Parkway.
3. LSU Rural Life Museum
Experience life in 18th and 19th-century Louisiana at this fascinating LSU museum. You’ll find 25 acres with 32 preserved historic outbuildings, divided into topic areas that include the Working Plantation, Exhibit Barn, Gulf Coast Region, and Upland South Region. You can also explore Windrush Gardens on the museum grounds.
The LSU Rural Life Museum is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $12 for ages 12 and older, $11 for seniors, and $10 for students, children, and members of the military. It’s located at 4560 Essen Lane, a quick trip from anywhere in the city in your Genesis.
